MD 166 (Rolling Road) is a state highway that connects the towns of Arbutus and Catonsville. It begins at I-195 and continues north, passing to the west of University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and to the east of the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) Catonsville campus. Much of the road is residential and ends in Catonsville at MD 144 (Frederick Road). A non-contiguous, county-maintained section of Rolling Road continues north to Woodlawn and Randallstown.
MD 166 technically has two northbound beginnings: one at the intersection of northbound Rolling Road at I-195's on-ramp and the other at the I-195/I-95 interchange.
This expressway section of MD 166 begins at the interchange of I-195 and I-95. An end sign is posted for I-195 at this interchange, with overhead signs showing the road as MD 166 with Catonsville as the control city.
There is an exit to the UMBC campus on this portion of the expressway. The left lane also leads to the Southwest Park and Ride, located in the middle of the I-195/MD 166 interchange at Rolling Road. From here, we intersect Rolling Road, with signs saying that MD 166 continues in both directions at this light.
North from Rolling Road and Selford Road
The mainline section of northbound MD 166 begins at the intersection of Rolling Road and I-195; there is a marker here indicating MD 166 is ahead.
There is no reassurance marker after the expressway's traffic light with Rolling Road. The next two signs are for the junction with MD 372 (Wilkens Avenue).
Continuing northward past MD 372 and alongside the Rolling Road Golf Club, we see the first and only northbound MD 166 reassurance marker along any part of the Rolling Road section.
MD 166 winds through mostly residential areas of Catonsville's southern end. Along this stretch of road are the Community College of Baltimore County's (CCBC) Catonsville campus and Catonsville High School. After a quite sudden bend near its northern terminus, we get a junction sign for MD 144 (Frederick Road).
MD 166 doesn't have an end sign, unfortunately. Rolling Road, however, does not end here. If you turn left onto MD 144 Westbound, about a half-mile down the road, you'll find North Rolling Road, which is over 7 miles long and intersects multiple routes, including US 40, MD 122, and MD 26, before ending at Old Court Road in Pikesville.
