I-895, also known as the Harbor Tunnel Thruway, is one of the major southwest-to-northeast connectors across Baltimore. It was finished in 1957 and has served traffic as a toll road since its inception, gaining the I-895 moniker in the 1980's.

Northbound
Photographed section is from US 1 in Elkridge to I-95 in Baltimore.
I-895 begins at I-95 with a partial interchange; there is no southbound access from I-895 to northbound I-95 or I-895 northbound access from I-95 south.
I-895 has no exits in the northbound direction until after the toll plaza. We get a series of confirmation markers after ramps from US 1, I-695, MD 295, the two I-895 spurs, and MD 2. This stretch is odd as well, as the Childs Street exit is after the toll plaza but before the tunnel.

Past the toll plaza, we reach the Childs Street exit and the entrance to the Harbor Tunnel. The original art deco style lettering overhead the tunnel remains and continues to greet those passing through.

Exiting the tunnel, the first exit is Holabird Avenue (Exit 10). This exit was rebuilt around 2020. Holabird Avenue runs towards Dundalk and a major Amazon facility, as well as Broening Highway.

We now approach the dual exits of Boston Street and O'Donnell Street. The O'Donnell Street exit was rebuilt during I-95's construction and both I-895's and I-95's exits to O'Donnell Street now merge into one ramp. The Boston Street exit actually leads to the O'Donnell Street Cutoff, the name of the road that was built when Boston Street was displaced during I-895's construction.

I-895 now reaches Lombard Street. When I-895 was first built, Lombard Street was extended to begin/end at this interchange. Over time, the expansion of Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center caused Lombard Street to get extended in tandem, and now the interchange leads to a stop light rather than a jughandle loop.

Continuing north, we reach US 40 East and Erdman Avenue. This was originally going to be the end of the Harbor Tunnel Thruway, but instead was extended to meet the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway, I-95.

The newest addition to I-895's terminus is the creation of I-95 Express Lanes. These were opened in 2014 and offer the opportunity for I-895 motorists to access I-95's express lanes. From here, I-895 merges onto I-95.
