I-83 is a major north-south interstate that connects Baltimore to southern Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Following along the former U.S. 111 corridor, I-83 was the first interstate to begin construction under the Federal-Aid Highway Act in Maryland. It has a small concurrency on the Baltimore Beltway that connects the Jones Falls Expressway within the beltway to the Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway outside of the beltway.
