DC 295, also known as the Anacostia Freeway, is the only "state" highway in DC, serving as a link between I-295, I-695, and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.
It runs from the junction of I-295 and I-695 to the DC-Maryland state line at MD 201.
Entering DC, we pass the Eastern Avenue exit. This stretch of road follows along the Kenilworth Avenue right of way with very small and very short on-and-off-ramps. The freeway has a speed limit of 50 mph. The next major exit is Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue and Minnesota Avenue.
The next major exit along DC 295 is Benning Road and Foote Street; this connects to RFK Stadium's back parking lots. The main exit for RFK Stadium is the East Capitol Street exit, but this helps alleviate traffic heading southbound towards the stadium. RFK Stadium is permanently closed now and is expected to be demolished by 2026.
The Orange Line of the DC Metro passes over DC 295, while the Blue and Silver Lines pass this interchange underground. DC 295 continues to a small southbound-only exit that leads to the River Terrace neighborhood. This exit runs to a stop sign at the intersection of Kenilworth Avenue and Baker Street. The exit after is East Capitol Street, which still has a sign for the Atlanta 1996 Summer Olympics above it when RFK Stadium hosted Olympic soccer.
We now approach East Capitol Street, with an older overhead sign saying "TO I-295 SOUTH"...with a very haphazardly added I-395 shield beside it. It's a very interesting design choice, but a choice nonetheless.
Approaching Pennsylvania Avenue, we see a mix of older and newer signs. A couple of missing reassurance markers used to say "TO SOUTH I-295/I-395", but both are now gone. An overhead sign at Pennsylvania Avenue does say "TO SOUTH I-295" as we approach the last mile of DC 295 SB.
DC 295 approches its southern terminus at I-695 and I-295. I-695 continues into downtown Washington D.C. and links to I-395, while I-295 continues south towards I-95/I-495.
